Avery Label Sizes Chart: Every Common Size

Avery® label sizes come in many shapes. This chart lists the common US and A4 sheets, how many labels each one holds, and what they are best for.

An Avery® label size is the size of one label on a sheet. Each sheet has a code, such as 5160, and a set number of labels. The label size and count are what matter most when you choose a sheet. This page lists the common sizes, shows how to measure a label and explains how to find your code.

These are some of the most common sheets. The counts come from our sheet list. Check the box for the exact code before you buy.

If you live in the UK, Europe or another A4 country, use the A4 list. These sheets have their label sizes in millimetres. The sheet codes start with L.

Sheets from other brands

Not every sheet has an Avery code. Other brands sell sheets that fit the same printers. We support sheets from SheetLabels.com, OnlineLabels.com and HERMA too. Their codes, such as SL100, EU30015 or HERMA 4103, are on the label sheets page with the same size and count details.

Do not worry if the code is not on the box. Measure one label first, then look for a sheet with the same size and count. If your sheet is not on our list, use the Custom size option.

Why the size matters more than the name

Two sheets can look alike in a shop and still differ by a few millimetres. A label that is a little too wide may cut off the end of a line. A label that is a little too tall may leave too little room for the last line of an address. Always compare the size before you print, not just the name on the box.

How to measure a label

If you cannot read the code, you can measure a label by hand. This works for any sheet, including ones from other brands.

  1. Take one sheet of labels and a ruler. Use a ruler that shows fractions of an inch, or one in millimetres.
  2. Measure the width of one label. Measure from the left edge to the right edge.
  3. Measure the height of one label. Measure from the top edge to the bottom edge.
  4. Count the labels across the top, and count the labels down the side.
  5. Multiply across by down. The result is the number of labels per sheet.
  6. Compare your numbers with the chart above.

For more accurate results, measure several labels. Measure from the left edge of the first label to the left edge of the fourth label, then divide by three. This averages out small errors.

Avery US sheets list the height first, then the width. So 1" × 2⅝" means 1 inch tall and 2⅝ inches wide. Check the picture on the sheet's page if you are not sure. A4 sheets are listed in millimetres as width then height.

How to find the code on the box

The code is printed on the front of the box or packet. It is often near the label size. Look for a number with four or five digits, such as 5160, 5163 or L7160.

Some codes start with a letter. The letter L marks an A4 sheet. Other brands use their own codes, such as SL100 from SheetLabels.com or EU30015 from OnlineLabels.com. LabelPeel lists those too.

If the box is gone, you can still find the right sheet. Measure a label, then check the chart. Two or more sheets may have the same size. Pick the one that matches your printer and paper.

Choosing the right sheet

Think about four things before you buy.

  • What the label is for. Address labels are small. Shipping labels are larger. Name badges and round labels are special shapes.
  • How much text you need. A label that is 1 inch tall fits about three lines of text at a small font size.
  • Your paper size. US Letter and A4 sheets are not the same. Buy the sheet that matches your printer tray.
  • Your printer type. Some sheets are made for laser printers and some for inkjet printers. Check the box before you buy.

Printing on a label sheet

Once you have the right code, print a test page on plain paper first. Hold it over a real sheet to check the lines. Then print at 100% or Actual size. Most problems come from the scale setting or the wrong paper size.

If you are making labels from a list, read how to print address labels for the full steps. If you use Word, see how to print labels in Word. For a list in Google Sheets, read how to print labels from Google Sheets.

Find the sheet you need

Browse all label sheets to see every size we support. Or go straight to a sheet page, such as Avery® 5160, Avery® 5163 or Avery® L7160 for A4.

Questions

Which Avery label size is good for addresses?

Avery 5160 is a widely used choice for US address labels. It has 30 labels per sheet, each 1 inch tall and 2⅝ inches wide.

How do I find my Avery label code?

Look on the front of the box or packet. The code is printed there, such as 5160 or 8160. You can also search the code on the label sheets page.

What size is an A4 address label?

The most common A4 address sheet is L7160, with 21 labels per sheet. Each label is 63.5 by 38.1 millimetres.

Can I use a US sheet on an A4 printer?

It depends on the sheet and the printer. Most printers take US Letter or A4 paper, but a Letter sheet may not fit an A4 tray. Check your printer's paper size before you buy.
