Avery 5160 vs 8160: What's the Difference?
Avery® 5160 and 8160 have the same label size, the same layout and the same 30 labels per sheet. The difference is the printer they are made for.
Avery® 5160 and Avery® 8160 are the same label, with the same size, layout and count. Both give you 30 address labels per sheet on US Letter paper. The only real difference is the printer each sheet is made for. Avery sells the 5160 for laser printers, and the 8160 for inkjet printers.
Why people mix them up
Search for "Avery 8160 template" and you will see many results. People often look for one code and end up with the other. Some find an 8160 template and think it is a different label from the 5160. It is not.
The layouts match. A design built for one code will fit the other. The only thing to check is the box, so you buy the right sheet for your printer.

Avery 5160 size and dimensions
The 5160 label is 1 inch tall and 2⅝ inches wide. That is about 25 millimetres by 67 millimetres. It has 3 labels across and 10 labels down. The label is small enough for a name and an address, with room for a country line.
The exact measurements, including the margins, are on the Avery® 5160 page. Use those numbers if you set up a page in a word processor by hand.
What the 8160 is for
The Avery® 8160 is the sheet Avery sells for inkjet printers. It is the same label as the 5160. If you have an inkjet printer at home, the 8160 is the sheet to buy.
You can find the 8160 template page on LabelPeel. The template uses the same positions as the 5160, so any design you make with one will print on the other.
Which one should you buy?
Use this simple check.
- Look at your printer. Is it a laser printer or an inkjet?
- If it is a laser printer, buy a 5160.
- If it is an inkjet printer, buy an 8160.
- If you are not sure, check the printer's manual or the product page. Laser printers use toner powder. Inkjet printers use liquid ink.
- Read the box before you open it. The packaging names the printer type.
Two common mix-ups
The first mix-up is about the code. The numbers look alike, so check them before you order. The 5163 is a shipping label with 10 labels per sheet. It is a different size from the 5160, so a 5163 design will not fit a 5160 sheet.
The second mix-up is about the printer. The 5160 and 8160 are made for different printer types, even though the labels match. Read the box for the printer type. If the box does not say, check your printer's manual.
Can you use one for the other?
The layout is the same, so a design fits either sheet. The real question is whether the sheet suits your printer. Use the sheet that the box describes for your printer type.
How to print the right label sheet
Once you have the right sheet, the steps are the same. Use a label tool or a template, then print.
- Paste your list into a label tool, or open the template in Word.
- Choose the sheet code, such as 5160.
- Print a test page on plain paper.
- Hold the test page over the sheet to check the lines.
- Print on the sheet at 100% or Actual size.

Printing a 5160 or 8160 from a list
If you have a list of names and addresses, the 5160 or 8160 is usually the sheet you want. Each row of your list becomes one label, so 30 rows fill one sheet.
Paste the list into a label tool, or use the mail merge in Word. Choose the sheet code that matches your printer. The label design is the same for both codes, so the steps do not change.
Before you print the full sheet, print one test page on plain paper. Hold it over a real sheet and look at the lines. If the text sits too high, too low, or too far to one side, nudge the layout and print the test again. This is quicker than wasting a sheet of labels.
Tips for a clean print:
- Use the paper size that matches the sheet. For these codes, that is US Letter.
- Print at 100% or Actual size, so the printer does not shrink the page.
- Load the sheet the way your printer's manual shows.
Other sheets with the same layout
Some other codes use the same layout as the 5160. The 5260, 5520 and 5630 are examples in the same family. Check the sheet's page to confirm the layout before you buy.
For a full list of label sizes, read the Avery label sizes chart. You can also browse all label sheets.
A note for A4 users
If you use A4 paper, the closest sheet is the L7160. It has 21 labels per sheet, each 63.5 by 38.1 millimetres. It is not the same as the 5160, so check the size before you use a US design on an A4 sheet.
Common problems
The labels do not line up. Print at 100% or Actual size, check the paper size, and print a test page first.
The text is too big for the label. Make the font smaller. A 1 inch label has room for only a few short lines.
You bought the wrong printer type. Check the box and the printer manual. Print a test page on plain paper before you use a full sheet.
